earth bound
The idea of sustainable living has been gathering ground in the last few years. More and more we are seeing recycled (and recyclable) materials used in the design of new and cutting-edge products. ‘Energy efficiency’, ‘non toxic’, ‘flat pack’ and ‘Forest Stewardship Council certified’ are just some of the familiar terms that come attached.
It certainly seems that everyone is sitting up and taking notice. Buildings now come with green features such as solar panels, roof gardens and grey water recycling systems; designers are working with manufacturers to come up with new ways to make their products greener; and consumers are becoming more aware and more open to the options available to them.
All that said and done, it would be fair to say that we are still in the blooming stages. On a micro level, many heartening developments are taking place, but at a macro level, we are still feeling our way. Founding Director of WOHA Designs, Richard Hassell, has commented that we need to look beyond a few symbolic actions and approach the problem systematically (page 36). To that end, it’s encouraging to see new developments in Singapore such as the Marina Bay Residences and The Oceanfront @ Sentosa Cove – both recipients of the BCA Green Mark award – bear not just eco-friendly features, but also take into consideration environmental issues in the whole construction process as well as ways to encourage a whole eco-lifestyle (page 38).
Thinking about green issues also got us looking at ways to spend more time outdoors, close to nature. And of course, we think there’s no better way to do it than on a luxurious outdoor lounge or canopied bed with a cup of icy cool beverage in hand (page 124)!
We urge you to take time to smell the roses…
