Every time the advanced copies of our magazine get delivered to the office, the team at the HC headquarters pounces on them with a level of fervour that would be quite bewildering, I should think, to an outsider not privy to the late nights the team spends hunched over the computer, throwing ideas back and forth, all the while downing mug after mug of steaming coffee as we set to work on the next big headline story.
This month, however, the air was so thick with anticipatory tension that you could almost cut through it with a knife. The reason? We were finally seeing our magazine’s new look come to life after months of planning.
As Home Concepts turns ten this October, our dear readers might have noticed that things are looking more than a little different. The masthead has changed, the look is fresher and edgier, a new section has been added, and more of such moves can be expected in the months to follow.
But… and this is a really big but… readers will be glad to know that the essence of the magazine will remain much the same… it’ll only get bolder, and sexier, from this point forward, with greater emphasis on stories that provoke thought, that inspire, that amuse and excite, that move past trends to get to heart of good design and to the issues that matter.
In this our revamp issue, we thought it only fitting to look at the designs that have truly stolen our hearts and minds – bold and brave ideas, meaningful works, designs that sit on the cutting edge, and others that simply make us smile, or stop and ponder.
One particularly enlightening event that really caught our attention was the Design Cities exhibition (page 64), currently being held at the Design Museum in London, which gives a bird’s eye view of the seven cities that are widely recognised as having generated and led the trends during each milestone of the Modern Movement, namely London, Vienna, Dessau, Paris, Los Angeles, Milan and Tokyo.
South African architecture also shares the spotlight this month. Specifically, the works of Jo Noero, a man who inspired us with his belief about the responsible nature in which architecture today should take, and who is trying to change the world for the better, through his work, one step at the time (page 70). Noero is in town this October to speak at the ArchiFest Forum.
We hope you’ll enjoy the new Home Concepts as much as we have loved putting it together!
