The Changing World Order
Most of us in the business and investment scene would probably remember the “production” era of the 1980’s. It was the time when Japan ruled the world with the best cars, electronics and production process. Then came the 1990’s – the era when Japan when into its “lost years” generation. The country went through an entire decade of slow or negative growth. Unemployment grew and so did competition, producing products far cheaper than it did. Towards the end of the decade came the age of the Internet, the dot.com boom and bust, as well as the age of venture capitalism. Lets not forget, this was the time of the hedge funds growth, the Asian monetary and economic crisis and political upheaval around the region.
The 21st century came with the promise of change, from the old school brick and mortar business age, towards the lean and efficient global technology era. For the first time ever, we have more than 20 companies in the Fortune Global 500, that are from the new age of business. Today we are increasingly moving towards a paperless, E-based business and banking cycle. More and more businesses are doing the buying and selling via the Internet and E-based business processes. The rise is this cycle has resulted in the growth of E-Banking, even here in Malaysia. Bank Negara statistics proves that Malaysians are making more online purchases than ever before and online banking is at an all time high.
To coincide with the growth of the “E” era, Smart Investor has dedicated the month of October as the month of the E-Banking & E-Business Special Focus. In this issue, we look at the rise in E-Banking and worries about cyber threats and security issues. The issue also takes a look at E-Business and its limitations such as regulation and other factors. Topics touched on include usage of credit cards and debit cards as well as enterprise based solutions. Here we get experts in the field to give their views on the advantages and disadvantages of current developments in the sector.
Besides the Special Focus, the magazine also has an in-depth coverage of the current roller-coaster ride facing the US market and the reaction from markets throughout the world. As I write this, the US Treasury is preparing a special multi billion US dollar fund to absorb the bad debts of ailing banks (quite similar to our own Danaharta, possibly?)
In our next issue, we will see how the initiatives fare over a period of time to ease worries of a recession in the US. In addition to this, we suggest if it is a good time to invest in commodities?
In other areas, we have a post-coverage on the recent Budget 2009 and what it means to businesses and the general public. Here we have two of the leading accounting firms in the country contributing via specialist writers in the field. Overall expect a comprehensive issue covering areas of interest for all our readers.
Have a pleasant read!
